a trauma recovery and anxious individual spending time in nature for self care and healing.

Over my years in counselling and therapy, I’ve found that what makes us and our body feel good is really a personal journey—what works for one person might not do the trick for someone else. Each of us has our own unique story shaped by different factors, like our physical health, how we process sensations, and our past experiences, which can shape what is okay and not okay for us.

The good news? Spending time in nature has amazing benefits, and it's completely free! When I say "nature," I mean taking a leisurely stroll in a green space like a park, relaxing in your backyard, sitting under a tree, or simply enjoying a refreshing breath of fresh air outside.

Research shows that being in natural surroundings can help reduce cortisol levels, which is a stress hormone. When we immerse ourselves in nature, it can offer relief for those dealing with depression, stress, anxiety or post-traumatic stress. These challenges can sometimes leave us feeling tense and on edge, but nature serves as a wonderful escape.

Spending time outdoors also boosts brain function, concentration, and clarity. Just 15 minutes outdoors can lower cortisol, reduce blood pressure, and give our cardiovascular health and mind a nice boost. Plus, kids raised in green spaces are less likely to develop a psychiatric illness later in life. So, parents, why not make those outdoor walks a fun family tradition? It helps everyone feel connected and promotes well-being.

As you work towards self-improvement and personal growth, like therapy for anxiety and trauma recovery, try to schedule those self-care moments just like you would for your family or a close friend. Treat yourself with the same care and commitment. By embracing these little moments in nature, you’ll discover a powerful tool for nurturing your well-being and leading you toward a healthier, happier life, more socially connected!
